Kerala Cuisine Among Lonely Planet’s Top Global Experiences for 2026

Kerala has earned global recognition as its rich and vibrant cuisine secures a prestigious spot on Lonely Planet’s list of the 25 best experiences to enjoy worldwide in 2026. The acclaimed travel guide spotlights Kerala as one of India’s most thrilling and authentic culinary destinations, celebrating the state’s deep-rooted culinary traditions, diverse flavors, and signature use of spices, coconut, and fresh seafood. Notably, Kerala is the only Indian state featured on the global list.

According to Lonely Planet, Kerala’s cuisine reflects a seamless blend of cultural influences and locally sourced ingredients, offering an unmatched sensory experience. From the festive sadhya, a traditional vegetarian feast served on banana leaves, to the spicy Kerala fish curry and pollichathu

(fish grilled in banana leaves), Every dish tells a story of tradition and taste.

Tourism and Public Works Minister PA Mohamed Riyas emphasized that this global recognition underscores Kerala’s evolving image as not just a scenic haven but also a world-class culinary destination. Smt. Sikha Surendran, Director of Kerala Tourism, added that the honor highlights how local cuisine has become a vital part of Kerala’s travel identity, standing proudly alongside its serene backwaters, beaches, and hill stations.

Travel writer Isabella Noble describes Kerala as a “food lover’s paradise,” where flavors vary dramatically across regions—from the spice-laced Mappila

dishes of northern Malabar to the coconut-infused stews and appam (rice pancakes) of the southern coast. She particularly praises the joyful simplicity of home-cooked meals, such as thoran, rasam, and mango chutney.

The guide also celebrates Kochi as an emerging global culinary hub, where centuries of spice trade have fostered a fusion of Indian, Arabic, and European influences, making it one of the most inspiring places to explore food in South India.

With this recognition, Kerala takes its place among the world’s most remarkable travel experiences, reaffirming its reputation as “God’s Own Country,” a destination where every meal is a journey through culture, history, and heart.
